Volunteer Opportunities

Book Buddies
Be a CID Book Buddy and get to know some of the children we serve! Your visit will start with a short period of questions and answers with the children (ages 5 and 6). Then you will read a story our teachers have selected. Students get to practice their conversation and listening skills – and make a new friend! Each book we read will help our students complete the reading requirement for the Read, Right and Run marathon.

This wonderful and engaging activity runs through April and requires 45 minutes of your time. Please call Bree DeGraw at 314.977.0163 or bdegraw@cid.edu to schedule your reading visit.

Flat Stanley
This project originated from a children’s book where the main character, Stanley, gets flattened by a bulletin board. His new flat shape enables him to travel the world because he’s able to squeeze into the most unlikely places.

You will be paired with a primary department classroom (students ages 6-12. Each class will create a Flat Stanley paper doll to share with you. Take Flat Stanley on trips and adventures (examples: ball park or zoo) and send postcards and photos from your destinations. Your correspondence will be posted on our bulletin board map so the students can see where Flat Stanley has traveled.

The Flat Stanley event runs through the end of the school year in May. To sign up, please contact Tracy Kodner at 314.977.0220 or tkodner@cid.edu.

Ultimate Picnic Committee
Calling all Glitterati! Make new friends and help plan the CID school’s single largest fundraiser of the year. This year’s Ultimate Picnic will be held on May 10, 2008. This year’s theme is the Roaring '20s!  For more than 13 years, CID has hosted this annual auction/dinner event with the help of a large and active committee of volunteers. This means you!

The committee meets monthly from January to May. Members help plan and assemble decorations and centerpieces, identify and solicit auction items and sell tickets and table sponsorships. Volunteers make the event a success by working during the months before the event to make sure it’s sold out, the auction items are abundant and exciting, and theme/decorations are fabulous. Bring a friend (or two) and be part of the team that makes the CID Ultimate Picnic a success! Please call Bree DeGraw at 314.977.0163 or bdegraw@cid.edu to join the committee.

We also need volunteers on the night of the event. Help keep an eye on auction items, be a spotter or runner during the live auction, assist with clean-up, and more. Many hands make light work!

Trivia Night
Join our Corporate Outreach Committee (COC) to plan our annual winter fundraiser! This year’s event will be on Saturday, February 23, 2008. Volunteers are needed for a few hours a week during January and February to sell raffle tickets, solicit silent auction items and sell tables of 10 ($25 per person, $250 per table – beer and soda provided). We also need volunteers on the night of the event to set up tables, keep score, collect answer sheets, sell more raffle tickets and mulligans, tend bar and more. This event is a tremendous amount of fun – come join us!  For more information, please contact Christy Maxfield at 314.977.0225 or cmaxfield@cid.edu.

School Helpers
Calling all friends ages 16 and up! Come help out in CID’s classrooms. Lend a hand during nap time, recess, gym or music. Students can use this opportunity to fulfill school volunteer requirements. Interested parties, please contact Susie Whaley at314.977.0104 or swhaley@cid.edu.

Answer Phones
If you’re a phone-friendly individual and have a few free hours between 8:30am and 3:00pm Monday – Friday, we need your help! Assist the CID school office by answering phones and directing calls during the school day. Please contact Michelle Gremp at 314.977.0130 or  mgremp@cid.edu.

Office Work
Do you have a few hours every now and again to stuff envelopes, help put together projects, file papers or help with office work? Call Tracy Kodner at 314.977.0220 tkodner@cid.edu to sign up for the CID Office Volunteer Registry. Let her know how to reach you and when you anticipate being available during the coming months.

Host an Event/Activity
Put on your thinking cap and create a cool one-time or cyclical activity for CID students! Need ideas? Throw a themed party, host a music performance, plan a picnic, help the Parents Organization with the ice cream social or take students on a behind-the-scenes tour of a fun destination … there are so many possibilities! Call Christy Maxfield at 314.977.0225 or cmaxfield@cid.edu to start planning.
