CID In-Service Training for Mainstream Schools
with Students Who Are Deaf and Hard of Hearing

PROFESSIONAL MODULES 1 and 2
for administrators, teachers, speech-language pathologists,
educators of the deaf and other school staff *

1. Can You Hear Me Now?
An Orientation to Hearing Loss in Children
Two hours

The first step to facilitating a successful mainstream experience is understanding how hearing loss affects a child. This in-service module provides a basic foundation for general educators and other school staff. It is designed to give them what they need to know about hearing loss when working or communicating with a student who is deaf or hard of hearing.

Topics include how we hear, understanding an audiogram, the impact of hearing impairment on children, understanding how  hearing aids and cochlear implants work and conversing with a student who is hearing-impaired. Ample time will be given to answering staff members’ questions.

We recommend pairing this module with “Paving the Way” when possible.

2. Paving the Way: Working with a Student Who Is Deaf or Hard of Hearing in a General Education Setting  One hour

Do you have a student with hearing loss in your classroom? Don’t panic! This in-service module will provide successful and practical teaching strategies for the student’s educational team to increase opportunities for the student to learn and achieve.

Topics include recommendations for classroom accommodations and/or program modifications, social implications and pragmatics, roles of various professionals and strategies for addressing academic difficulties.

This module pairs well with “Can You Hear Me Now? An Orientation to Hearing Loss in Children.”

PROFESSIONAL MODULES 3 and 4
for SLPs and resource room teachers working with a child who is deaf or hard of hearing (or a child with normal hearing who has a speech delay)

3. Speech Development in Children Who Are  Deaf and Hard of Hearing: A Look at the CID Speech Skills Worksheet  One hour

Students who are deaf or hard of hearing do not always develop speech the way children with normal hearing do. This in-service will provide an overview of speech development in children who are deaf and hard of hearing as well as give professionals an in-depth look at how to use the CID Speech Skills Worksheet.

Topics include an overview of speech development for children who are deaf and hard of hearing; a description of the speech skills worksheet including what it is, who can use it and how to use it; and the benefits of using the Speech Skills Worksheet for identifying present speech levels, setting speech goals, and tracking speech progress.

4. Tracking Grammatical Development: A Look at the TAGS (Teacher Assessment of Grammatical Structures) One hour

Children with language delays often need intensive and specific language instruction focusing on the grammatical structures of spoken language. This in-service module will provide speech-language pathologists and resource room teachers with a tool for supporting that instruction.

Topics include an overview of the development of grammatical skills in children; a description of the TAGS including what it is, who can use it and how to use it; and the benefits of using the TAGS for identifying present language levels, setting language goals and tracking language progress.
